Case study /04

Calder Rowe — advice that holds up under scrutiny

A full-service solicitors’ site that maps every immigration route, fixes the scope and price of each package, and puts a carefully guard-railed assistant on the page to triage enquiries before they reach a caseworker.

The challenge /01

People with an immigration problem cannot name it.

Someone facing a visa refusal does not arrive knowing whether they need an administrative review, an appeal, or a fresh application. They know the outcome they want and the deadline they are frightened of. Most legal sites answer with a list of practice areas, which is an answer to a question they have not worked out how to ask yet.

Firms lose enquiries in that gap — not on price, but because the visitor never established that this firm handles their particular situation.

Our approach /02

Name every route, fix every scope, then triage in conversation.

The site lists routes in the language people actually use — joining family, staying, settling, hiring — grouped into six categories that cover refusals and detention alongside the straightforward applications. A visitor finds their situation by recognising it rather than by knowing its legal name.

Pricing follows the same logic. Four packages state what is included at each level, from a single advice session through to refusal and appeal work, so cost is legible before anyone picks up a phone.

The assistant handles what remains. It maps a described situation onto a route, explains what evidence is usually needed, and hands over to a human at the point where genuine legal advice would begin.

The product /03

Calder Rowe — home

Calder Rowe home page with the headline beside a callback request form
Regulation stated first. SRA regulation and IAA accreditation sit above the headline, and the callback form shares the fold rather than waiting at the bottom of the page.

Calder Rowe — practice areas

Practice area cards covering visas, sponsorship, family, employment, conveyancing and probate
Matters that arrive together. Practice areas are grouped by the life events that trigger several at once, rather than by the firm’s internal departments.

Calder Rowe — visa routes

Six categories of immigration route including refusals, challenges, protection and detention
Every route, including the hard ones. Refusals, challenges, protection and detention are listed as plainly as work and study visas.

Calder Rowe — packages

Four fixed-scope packages: advice session, full application, deadline work, refusal and appeal
Fixed scopes, quoted before work begins. Each package lists what is included, and a separate document-checking service is offered for people who would rather file themselves.

Calder Rowe — how it works

Four step process from enquiry to matched adviser to case built to decision
Four steps, end to end. Enquiry, matched adviser, case built, decision — so a first-time client knows what the following weeks look like.

Calder Rowe — FAQ

Frequently asked questions accordion answering what clients ask first
The questions asked first. An accordion covering the objections that otherwise get raised on an initial call, answered before the call happens.

The assistant /04

Guard rails are the feature, not the disclaimer.

An assistant on a solicitor’s site carries real risk: give a confident answer about someone’s immigration status and you have arguably given unregulated legal advice. The constraints were therefore designed before the capability.

  • Never states or implies a guaranteed outcome
  • Never presents itself as formal legal advice — case-specific questions are routed to a callback
  • Escalates immediately to a phone call where detention, bail, an airport hold or an imminent deadline is mentioned
  • Answers briefly and in plain language, holding to two or three short paragraphs
  • Scoped to the firm’s actual practice areas so it declines to speculate outside them

That last rule matters most. The highest-risk enquiry — someone held at an airport — is the one where a chat interface is the wrong tool, and the system is built to say so rather than to help.
